Woman compensated after falling on escalator

A woman has been awarded £3,750 compensation after she fell on a malfunctioning escalator in a department store.

The woman was shopping in British Home Stores when she travelled on the in-store escalator to get to a different floor. The escalator suddenly stopped causing her to fall.

She suffered bruising to both hands, the right side of her body and her forehead.

The woman took legal action against the store, claiming staff had been negligent in allowing her to use the escalator when it wasn’t functioning properly. They had neglected their duty of care by failing to ensure that she was safe on the premises.

The woman had visible injuries for three months before she completely recovered.

British Home Stores accepted liability and agreed to an out-of-court settlement of £3,750.
